Borough Market

CENTRAL LONDON, UK

Three hours later, Raoul and Grace ascended the steps from the London Bridge underground station. Cyclists pedaled past them. Trains rolling across a trackway let out a high-pitched squeak. They passed under a narrow, dim archway of red bricks.

Raoul slid his hands into his pockets and broke the silence. “It’s only been one day. I didn’t find my flat until I’d been in London for three weeks. You’ll find the right flat, trust me. These things just take time.”

“You’re right. I just hoped we’d get lucky today.” Grace rubbed her temples. Finding a property on the internet and seeing it in person, she was learning, told two very different stories. Both of the properties she’d visited so far with Raoul had had some type of issue.

The first one had been situated above a lively pub. Despite the assurances of the estate agent, the sound carried through the floor. Then, there was the flat they’d just come from. It had been so tight space-wise that Grace hadn’t been able to walk across the studio without touching Raoul. Not that she minded. She just hoped he hadn’t noticed her face had been burning red hot the entire time they were there.

“You’re always welcome to stay with me if you’d like.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” Her voice came out slightly high pitched, and she turned it into a cough.

He glanced her direction. “You good?”

Grace pounded her chest. “Fine. Fine. Just swallowed something funny.” She cleared her throat as they paused at a signal. “So, where are we going now?”

“Borough Market.” Raoul flashed her a grin. “I don’t know about you, but viewing flats is difficult work. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m starving, and Borough Market is one of the best places in London to experience the foodie culture.”

“Okay, Mr. Foodie.” She cocked her head to the side. “What are your top-three favorite items at the market?”

“It’s impossible to only pick three. You’ll see why when you get there.” He rubbed his stomach. “The better question is what should we eat first? I’ve been craving these cream-filled donuts from a stall called Bread Ahead. But there are also these chorizo rolls . . .”

She furrowed her brow.

He gestured with his hands. “Think grilled sausages, stuffed into ciabatta rolls and served with peppers.”

She made a face. “That doesn’t sound too appealing.”

He licked his lips. “I promise, they are delicious.”

The signal changed from red to green. They crossed the street.

“I’m not normally too adventurous with my food.”

“Trust me. Once you’ve started spending more time with me, you’ll be coming back at least once a week. There is always something new to discover.”

She held her breath for a moment. He wanted to keep spending time with her. Raoul really was a man who was unassuming. Sure, he’d flirted with her when they’d first met, but since they’d begun texting one another and spending more time with each other, their relationship had evolved into something else altogether. Grace wasn’t quite ready to give it a designation yet.
